Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many combos do starting hands have?

There are 1326 starting combinations in total. A pocket pair has 6 (for example AA), a suited hand has 4 (AKs) and an offsuit hand has 12 (AKo). They are the foundation of range and equity maths.

What are blockers?

A blocker is a card you hold that removes combos from the opponent’s range. If you hold the ace of spades, your opponent has 3 AA combos instead of 6 and AK drops from 16 to 12 combos.

Why count combos?

To compare ranges honestly: how many pairs, strong hands and bluffs they contain, and what value-to-bluff ratio a bet has. River decisions are almost always built on combo counts, not on feel.

How do I turn combos into a range percentage?

Divide the number of combos by 1326. Six combos of AA are 0.45% of all starting hands, and a range of 170 combos is about 12.8%.
