Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is ICM in poker?
ICM (Independent Chip Model) converts tournament chips into money according to the payout structure. The Malmuth-Harville model estimates each player’s chance to finish in each place, assuming the chance of winning is proportional to the chip share.
Why are tournament chips not worth a fixed amount?
Chips you lose are worth more than chips you win: busting removes all future payouts. On the bubble and at the final table the chip leader’s equity is lower than his chip share, while short stacks are worth more than their share.
How do I use ICM in decisions?
Compare ICM equity before and after the action: a call has to be profitable once the lower cash value of a loss is counted. That is why a bubble call needs a stronger hand than the same call in a cash game.
What are the limits of the calculator?
The model ignores position, future blinds and skill differences, and knockouts or bonuses must be put into the payouts by hand. It is a standard estimate for study and review, not a solver replacement.
