Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is SPR in poker?

SPR (stack-to-pot ratio) is the effective stack divided by the pot on the flop. With 20 BB in the pot and 100 BB behind, SPR is 5. The lower it is, the easier it is to get stacks in and the weaker a hand can be for an all-in.

How does SPR change hand selection?

At low SPR (up to 3) top pair with a decent kicker is often enough to stack off. At medium SPR (3–6) you want strong pairs and good draws. At high SPR (above 6) sets, straights and flushes win the big pots and a single pair is often a medium-strength hand.

What is the effective stack?

The smaller of the stacks of the players still in the hand: that is the most you can win or lose. With 150 BB against a 60 BB opponent, the effective stack is 60 BB.

Why does preflop sizing change SPR?

Bigger raises and 3-bets preflop build a bigger flop pot and lower the SPR. That is why 3-bet pots play short and often go all-in with good pairs, while single-raised pots play deeper.
